UT Thickness Testing

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing is crucial for monitoring in-service damage mechanisms like erosion and corrosion, which can cause wall loss in critical components.

Students in training

This method is indispensable for industries such as oil and gas, power generation, and chemical processing, where even small changes in thickness can lead to catastrophic failures. Interestingly, ultrasonic testing is so precise that it can detect thickness changes as small as 0.001 inches, making it a vital tool for preventative maintenance.

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing, in particular, is crucial for monitoring in-service damage mechanisms like erosion and corrosion, which can cause wall loss in critical components.

    In this course, we cover:

    • •The history and fundamentals of Ultrasonic Testing
    • •An overview of various testing applications
    • •The different types of ultrasonic equipment and transducers
    • •The advantages and limitations of ultrasonic testing
    • •Common damage mechanisms causing wall loss, such as erosion and corrosion
    • •Techniques for performing grid maps, storing readings, and conducting localized scans
    • •Proper reporting and recording of defects

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

    • •Understand the various types of ultrasonic equipment and transducers used for different applications
    • •Characterize ultrasonic signals to detect and evaluate defects
    • •Calibrate ultrasonic equipment and perform inspections according to applicable code requirements
    • •Document and report inspection results accurately

The course includes 12 hours of hands-on training, during which instructors will demonstrate equipment calibration, scanning of various samples, and data transfer techniques. Students will also practice on real-world examples to reinforce their skills. Upon successful completion, participants will receive 24 total hours of accredited classroom instruction and a Classroom Certificate, with knowledge assessed through an exam.
